What is Sight Words? 什么是常用字？
- 是孩子初期閱讀物中出現(xiàn)頻率高的單字。包含了不少抽象意義的介詞和代詞，例如：for, to, he, it 等。

常用字的特性除了“高頻率”之外，對于以非英文為母語的孩子來說，還有“較不符合字母拼讀法（Phonics）發(fā)音規(guī)則”以及“中文解釋較困難，混雜文法變化”等特性。

Sight words
就是兒童閱讀初級的常用字，共有220個字，是由美國學(xué)者E.W.Dolch在二次世界大戰(zhàn)之前，針對英語兒童讀物做了分析，統(tǒng)計后，所整理出最常被使用的220個字，分成五個levels,所以這220個字被稱為Dolch
Sight Words。另外Dolch亦列出童書中最常出現(xiàn)的95個名詞：Dolch Nouns來搭配sight
words學(xué)習(xí)，對初階英語學(xué)習(xí)者是不可缺的基礎(chǔ)。
為什么在孩子初學(xué)英語進(jìn)入閱讀階段，需要特別教sight
words呢？如果孩子在閱讀單句前，在十個字中已能讀出其中的七，八個字，其余的再利用phonics拼讀法試著讀出，再結(jié)合讀本中提供的圖片以及前后文，做文意之猜測與理解，那么，基本上，孩子就踏出英語閱讀的第一步了。

words在孩子早期閱讀的書本中就占了60%~85%.也就是說，在指導(dǎo)孩子閱讀之前，若能先帶入sight
words,英語教學(xué)的過程就會更順利。尤其是一些特別著墨于sight
words認(rèn)識的讀本，更會不自覺地培育出孩子地閱讀能力，也帶出了孩子的閱讀興趣。美國知名作家Dr.seuss大概是將sight
words發(fā)揮到最淋漓盡致的一位兒童文學(xué)作家，他最有名的一本兒童讀本The Cat in the
Hat還被拍成電影《魔法靈貓》，讀本中簡單的用詞加上有趣的故事內(nèi)容，甚至連一般初學(xué)英語者，只要具備sight
words能力，便能輕而易舉地享受閱讀的樂趣，在此引用書中部分內(nèi)容：
The sun did not shine.
It was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house.
All that cold,cold,wet day.
I sat there with Sally.
We sat there, we two.
And I said,'How I wish we had something to do!'
Too wet to go out.

文中除了書底線的字外，其余都是sight
words!若孩子在閱讀中，可以快速地認(rèn)出這些字，除了讓閱讀更順暢，理解更完整外，孩子亦不會因為太多生字而放棄閱讀。
