1873年10月9日,卡爾·史瓦西(Karl Schwarzschild)出生于德國(guó)法蘭克福的一個(gè)猶太家庭,他自小就對(duì)天文學(xué)以及像音樂(lè)、美術(shù)等學(xué)科感興趣。年僅16歲時(shí),憑借杰出的能力,他就寫(xiě)出了第一篇研究論文。這是一篇關(guān)于天體力學(xué)的雙星軌道理論的文章,于1890年發(fā)表在最古老的天文學(xué)期刊——《Astonomische Nachrichten(天文學(xué)筆記)》上。

在俄國(guó)期間,他撰寫(xiě)了關(guān)于愛(ài)因斯坦理論和普朗克量子理論的論文,后篇包括了對(duì)斯塔克效應(yīng)(氫原子譜線在外部電場(chǎng)下移動(dòng)的現(xiàn)象)的解釋和對(duì)這一效應(yīng)基于量子理論假設(shè)的證明。

要真正欣賞史瓦西的工作,必須了解一些物理學(xué)史。

1915年12月22日,阿爾伯特·愛(ài)因斯坦收到了一封來(lái)自一戰(zhàn)戰(zhàn)壕的信。破舊褶皺的信封上覆滿塵土,寄件人的姓名已經(jīng)被一大塊血跡蓋住。打開(kāi)后他才看到這個(gè)天才的名字:卡爾·史瓦西。

愛(ài)因斯坦震驚的原因在于,僅僅在他理論發(fā)表后的一個(gè)月,史瓦西就能夠找出這些復(fù)雜且高度非線性的偏微分方程的精確解,而他自己作為理論的提出者,也不過(guò)只是能給出找到近似解的數(shù)學(xué)技巧而已。史瓦西在充斥著爆炸和毒氣的戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)中做到這些無(wú)異于一個(gè)奇跡。

對(duì)史瓦西的結(jié)果進(jìn)行輕微的調(diào)整就可以得到一個(gè)以他的名字命名的著名的解——史瓦西度規(guī)(Schwarzschild metric)。

現(xiàn)在,物理學(xué)家和數(shù)學(xué)家通常會(huì)借助強(qiáng)大的計(jì)算機(jī)和數(shù)值技巧來(lái)求解這些棘手復(fù)雜的方程。

史瓦西解的闡釋

史瓦西采用了簡(jiǎn)單的假設(shè),考慮一個(gè)真空的、球?qū)ΨQ、不帶電荷、無(wú)旋轉(zhuǎn)的理想情況,隨后運(yùn)用場(chǎng)方程確定天體的中心質(zhì)量使空間變形的情況,和炮彈放在一個(gè)塑料板上使其變形類似。

沒(méi)有宇宙常數(shù)的廣義相對(duì)論方程可以寫(xiě)作:

史瓦西度規(guī)如下:

在距離球體距離較長(zhǎng)時(shí),重力表現(xiàn)得和牛頓預(yù)測(cè)的一樣;但如果靠近具有強(qiáng)引力質(zhì)量的物體,廣義相對(duì)論的結(jié)果就會(huì)偏離牛頓的經(jīng)典描述。

史瓦西的精確解在今天具有廣泛的應(yīng)用,比如追蹤天體的軌跡、行星軌道,以及光線經(jīng)過(guò)強(qiáng)引力體時(shí)的偏轉(zhuǎn)角。

史瓦西奇點(diǎn)

像之前愛(ài)因斯坦預(yù)言的那樣,史瓦西度規(guī)和標(biāo)準(zhǔn)恒星符合得很好,周圍的空間彎曲是有限的,但這個(gè)解還留下了些非常奇怪的問(wèn)題。

當(dāng)一個(gè)巨大的天體耗盡燃料并由于自身引力驅(qū)使開(kāi)始坍縮,中心質(zhì)量集中在一個(gè)小的區(qū)域時(shí),就會(huì)出現(xiàn)復(fù)雜的情況。

史瓦西的計(jì)算預(yù)測(cè),時(shí)空結(jié)構(gòu)在這種情況下不只會(huì)彎曲、而是完全撕裂,巨大的引力會(huì)導(dǎo)致塌縮持續(xù),星體的密度會(huì)不斷增加,直到空間具有無(wú)限曲率,最終永遠(yuǎn)與世隔絕,變成一個(gè)不可逃脫的洞。這被稱為史瓦西奇點(diǎn),也就是我們熟悉的“黑洞”。

由于物理學(xué)當(dāng)時(shí)還沒(méi)有接受無(wú)窮的意義(無(wú)窮當(dāng)時(shí)沒(méi)有物理意義),史瓦西起初認(rèn)為自己的解只是一個(gè)特殊的數(shù)學(xué)結(jié)果,是永遠(yuǎn)沒(méi)有自然界實(shí)體對(duì)應(yīng)的抽象想法,他認(rèn)為方程中出現(xiàn)的奇點(diǎn)只是個(gè)不合理的錯(cuò)誤。

史瓦西解的物理闡釋不僅違反常識(shí),而且還會(huì)違背愛(ài)因斯坦的理論甚至動(dòng)搖物理學(xué)的根基,因?yàn)樵谄纥c(diǎn)中,時(shí)空的概念不再存在。

史瓦西便開(kāi)始致力于去除奇點(diǎn),他以為其中的差別可能源于引入了理想假設(shè),而現(xiàn)實(shí)中并不存在這樣完美的不帶電球體。

進(jìn)行這個(gè)工作時(shí),他用完了三個(gè)筆記本,推出每個(gè)物體內(nèi)都包含一個(gè)奇點(diǎn),當(dāng)物質(zhì)被充分壓縮到一個(gè)特定的半徑時(shí)就會(huì)出現(xiàn)。對(duì)于太陽(yáng)來(lái)說(shuō),這個(gè)半徑是3千米;而對(duì)于地球則是8毫米。

在奇點(diǎn)之外存在一個(gè)壁壘,是不能“回頭”的標(biāo)志點(diǎn),一旦一個(gè)物體跨過(guò)這條線,就會(huì)被永遠(yuǎn)困住。幾十年后,這個(gè)臨界極限被命名為史瓦西半徑

難道就沒(méi)有人知道奇點(diǎn)內(nèi)有什么了嗎?史瓦西度規(guī)預(yù)測(cè)時(shí)空會(huì)互換角色:空間會(huì)像時(shí)間那樣流動(dòng)(單向指向奇點(diǎn)),而時(shí)間會(huì)像空間那樣展開(kāi)(過(guò)去、現(xiàn)在和將來(lái)不能區(qū)分)。

這樣的扭轉(zhuǎn)則會(huì)違背因果律:在假設(shè)中,如果一個(gè)人能越過(guò)這道溝壑,那他就能收到來(lái)自未來(lái)的光信號(hào),于是他便可以預(yù)見(jiàn)沒(méi)有發(fā)生的事件。如果他能避免重力撕碎并達(dá)到中心,就可以在一瞬間分辨宇宙的未來(lái)演化和過(guò)去。

《閃電俠》中好像就涉及到了這樣離奇的科幻情節(jié)。

水星的近日點(diǎn)進(jìn)動(dòng)

拋開(kāi)其他的不談,史瓦西度規(guī)使廣義相對(duì)論獲得了認(rèn)可,因?yàn)樗昝赖孛枋隽怂擒壍篱L(zhǎng)期的異常行為(水星近日點(diǎn)進(jìn)動(dòng))。

人們知道,行星以橢圓形軌道繞太陽(yáng)運(yùn)動(dòng)。每個(gè)行星的質(zhì)量都會(huì)對(duì)其他行星的軌道產(chǎn)生微小的影響,其他行星的軌道受到影響都會(huì)繞太陽(yáng)產(chǎn)生進(jìn)動(dòng)。除了水星以外的其他行星受到的影響都很微小,可以用牛頓的引力定律解釋。

而水星軌道被觀測(cè)到一個(gè)很明顯的進(jìn)動(dòng),并不與用牛頓力學(xué)計(jì)算的結(jié)果符合。一開(kāi)始人們認(rèn)為,這是由于太陽(yáng)和水星之間還存在另一個(gè)行星——被稱為“祝融星”,產(chǎn)生了這樣的差異,但它從未被觀測(cè)到。

史瓦西計(jì)算出了水星軌道的解,并表明相對(duì)論導(dǎo)致軌道自己產(chǎn)生進(jìn)動(dòng),這支持廣義相對(duì)論而非牛頓引力定律。

不治之癥

在與愛(ài)因斯坦分享成果的同一天,史瓦西從俄國(guó)給自己的妻子寫(xiě)了一封信,抱怨身體內(nèi)不尋常的感覺(jué)。沒(méi)過(guò)多久,疾病就蔓延到了他的全身。

我不知道怎么描述,但它有股不能控制的力量遮蔽了我所有思緒,它是一種沒(méi)有形狀和維度的空洞、是一片看不見(jiàn)的陰影,耗盡了我全部靈魂。

在戰(zhàn)區(qū)醫(yī)院,軍醫(yī)診斷他患上了一種罕見(jiàn)的不能治愈的皮膚病——尋常天皰瘡,身體會(huì)無(wú)法分別出自身細(xì)胞從而使免疫系統(tǒng)強(qiáng)烈攻擊皮膚。水泡開(kāi)始只是在他臉上起了兩個(gè),便很快布滿了全身。

醫(yī)生認(rèn)為可能是戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)上的毒氣襲擊造成了他的患病,史瓦西在日記中這樣描述那些襲擊:

“月亮很快就劃過(guò)了天空,好像加速了一樣。士兵們都整理好了裝備,只等著進(jìn)攻的口令,但是這場(chǎng)景卻奇怪又令人不安,好像不祥之兆,我可以看出他們眼中的恐懼?!?/p>

由于疾病,史瓦西于1916年3月從前線回到了哥廷根。兩個(gè)月后他不堪病痛的折磨去世,享年42歲,葬于哥廷根的家族墓地中。

人們用史瓦西的名字命名了一顆小行星837 Schwarzschilda,它繞太陽(yáng)公轉(zhuǎn)周期是3.48年,距離太陽(yáng)2.21-2.39 AU(天文單位)。它由德國(guó)天文學(xué)家馬克思·沃夫在史瓦西去世的幾個(gè)月后在海德堡的一個(gè)天文臺(tái)首次發(fā)現(xiàn)。

德國(guó)天文學(xué)會(huì)以他的名字設(shè)立了一個(gè)獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng),卡爾·史瓦西獎(jiǎng)?wù)?,以表彰杰出的天文學(xué)家和天體物理學(xué)家。獎(jiǎng)?wù)碌氖孜猾@得者是史瓦西的兒子馬丁·史瓦西(Martin Schwarzschild)。
