It is a great pleasure  to share your Commencement Day with you. You grade 10 students are embarking on a three year journey that will bring you great opportunities to develop your intellect, to deepen the balance and breadth of your character and to broaden your horizons. These three years could be transformative for the rest of your life.

很高興與大家一起分享今天的開(kāi)學(xué)典禮。十年級(jí)的學(xué)生將開(kāi)啟為期三年的旅程，積累知識(shí)，塑造人格，拓寬視野。這是變革性的三年，會(huì)改變你們的未來(lái)歲月。

You are joining a school that has developed spectacularly in just a handful of years. From small beginnings in a few borrowed rooms, WLSA Shanghai Academy has sent alumni to some of the best universities in the world. More importantly, WSA has enabled its students to value their Chinese identity within a global context. As WSA students we expect you to celebrate the great gifts Chinese culture brings to the world while being open-minded and expansive, appreciating different ways of doing things. There is a great world out there from which to draw inspiration.

你們加入的是一所近年來(lái)飛速發(fā)展的學(xué)校。從只有幾間很小的租來(lái)的教室開(kāi)始，WLSA上海學(xué)校已經(jīng)培養(yǎng)出許多就讀世界頂尖大學(xué)的校友。尤為重要的是，WLSA上海學(xué)校能讓學(xué)生珍視中國(guó)身份，擁有全球視野。作為WSA學(xué)生，希望大家既能贊美中國(guó)文化給世界帶來(lái)的巨大財(cái)富，又能以開(kāi)放的胸襟和廣闊的視野，尊重不同的行事方式。這是一個(gè)偉大的世界，大家可以從中獲取靈感。

My own inspiration is drawn from you, the students. I first became involved in education in China some 15 years ago when I was Head Masterof Eton College and came to know Dr. Jia. After many discussions and conferences, the idea evolved to create the World Leading Schools Association which was formally founded in 2011. The intention was to bring together some of the best schools in the world. To begin with, the focus was on schools in China and the West. There were student and faculty exchanges, events of various kinds and a great deal of sharing of ideas. WLSA has now grown to be a genuinely global organisation with schools invited in to membership from India, Brazil and parts of Africa as well as Europe, the UK and the USA.

我的靈感來(lái)自于你們，來(lái)自于同學(xué)們。大約15年前，作為伊頓公學(xué)的校長(zhǎng)，我第一次接觸中國(guó)教育事業(yè)，并結(jié)識(shí)了賈博士。經(jīng)過(guò)了多次討論與會(huì)談，2011年，我們正式創(chuàng)建了世界名中學(xué)聯(lián)盟，旨在把全世界一些最好的學(xué)校聯(lián)合起來(lái)。最開(kāi)始，我們主要注重中國(guó)和西方之間的學(xué)校交流，例如學(xué)生和教工的交換項(xiàng)目，舉辦各種活動(dòng)，分享不同經(jīng)驗(yàn)等。如今，WLSA已經(jīng)成長(zhǎng)為名副其實(shí)的世界性組織，其成員學(xué)校來(lái)自印度，巴西，一些非洲國(guó)家，以及歐洲，英國(guó)和美國(guó)。

WLSA was created to forge a new approach to globalism, based on a strong sense of personal and national identity but with an equally strong commitment to learn from one another and to draw from the best ideas around the world. WLSA Shanghai Academy has been created as a school to embody those ideals and it is my privilege to serve as President of WSA keeping a watchful eye on the progress of everyone in the school community. As you embark on our journey, I would like you to remember that you are part of a great new school, but also part of something bigger, at the forefront of a movement that will help shape the world. Our purpose all along has been to encourage a new generation who will help the world be a better place.

WLSA致力于發(fā)展全球化新路徑，懷著強(qiáng)烈的個(gè)人和民族認(rèn)同感，竭盡所能相互學(xué)習(xí)，從世界各地汲取思想精華。WLSA上海正是踐行這些理念的學(xué)校。很榮幸身為WLSA上海學(xué)校的校長(zhǎng)，我會(huì)密切關(guān)注學(xué)校每個(gè)人的發(fā)展。啟航之際，我希望你們記住，今天上海的莘莘學(xué)子，明天全球的未來(lái)領(lǐng)袖。一直以來(lái)，我們的目標(biāo)就是培養(yǎng)新生代，讓世界更美好。

That sounds a tall order! But you will do it. You will achieve this mighty goal if you learn good habits, if you strive always to be and do better, and if you are sensitive to the needs of the people around you, Become a thoughtful and generous-spirited leader in your school community and you will develop into an effective leader in all the communities of which you will be a part in the future.

這聽(tīng)起來(lái)有些高不可攀，但你們能做到！如果你們養(yǎng)成良好的習(xí)慣，如果你們一直努力做得更好，如果你們急人之所需，你們一定能達(dá)成這個(gè)宏偉目標(biāo)。你們?cè)趯W(xué)校團(tuán)體中成為深謀遠(yuǎn)慮、光明磊落的領(lǐng)袖，未來(lái)，你們會(huì)成為任何集體中卓有成效的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)者。

There is an important thing to remember about leadership. The best leaders know how to serve. This might sound an odd thing to say, but in my experience is undoubtedly true. In order to learn how to lead, you need to learn how to be an active, collaborative follower, someone who finds ways to help a group or a designated leader find solutions to problems.

關(guān)于領(lǐng)導(dǎo)力，有一點(diǎn)非常重要。最好的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)者深知如何奉獻(xiàn)。這聽(tīng)起來(lái)可能有些奇怪，但我的經(jīng)驗(yàn)表明這是千真萬(wàn)確的。要學(xué)會(huì)如何領(lǐng)導(dǎo)，你需知如何成為一個(gè)積極主動(dòng)、善于協(xié)作的跟隨者，一個(gè)善于幫助集體解決問(wèn)題、為領(lǐng)導(dǎo)排憂(yōu)解難的人。

I believe the way that we work together will become of great significanceduring your lifetime, more than ever before in history. Why? Because thefast-developing world of artificial intelligence will do some things muchbetter than humans - analysis, for example, detailed precision, even diagnosisand strategic thinking. So society will focus more on what makes us uniquelyhuman - compassion for other people, for example, the ability to share and worksupportively in a team, sparking that specifically human quality of curiositythat leads to creativity. We want WSA to be a supportive, energetic, positive,creative place that inspires everyone who is involved: teachers, students andparents. This will happen because you make it happen.

我堅(jiān)信，在你們的有生之年，我們的合作方式將比以往任何時(shí)候意義更為重大。為什么？因?yàn)樵诳焖侔l(fā)展的今天，人工智能已經(jīng)能在很多方面比我們做得好很多，例如詳細(xì)精確的分析，甚至診斷和戰(zhàn)略思維。因此，現(xiàn)今社會(huì)更關(guān)注的是什么使我們殊而為人——例如同情他人，在團(tuán)隊(duì)工作中分享和合作的能力，激發(fā)靈感從而產(chǎn)生創(chuàng)造力。我們希望WLSA上海學(xué)校能成為一所相互鼓勵(lì)的、充滿(mǎn)活力的、積極向上的、富有創(chuàng)造力的地方，它將激勵(lì)不論是老師，學(xué)生還是家長(zhǎng)的每個(gè)人。因?yàn)槟銈儯@些都會(huì)實(shí)現(xiàn)。

You have the wonderful opportunity to help shape a school community and the lives of your classmates, as well as shape you own destiny. Embrace this opportunity to the full!
