Of course faster speeds don’t hurt, but for me I don’t really get the hype about 5G. Most web pages already load fast on the phone (with The Verge being the exception, there’s a LONG delay now for some reason, even on desktop). Abbott77 5G is not just about mobile devices though. It’s about the future connectivity of cars and many other devices that will be part of the IOT revolution. It will also allow you to ultimately have one internet provider since it will offer speeds not seen on even fiber to the home with ping times that will rival wired connections. Those speeds will also put pressure on ISP’s to up their speed offerings and coverage to homes as they will have legit competition now from many other providers. Most people look at this technology right now through a very thin and myopic lens but it has many larger implications to our connectivity. ![]() LeoMC US means just 33% of all Americans (and has less than 25% of American surface area). The people from Brazil – which are 20% of all Americans – have limited access to internet mainly due to their income; the same goes for the people in Mexico – another 12% of all Americans – that only have lte in the big cities but there are tens of millions Americans that live in the country and hardly have access to 3G.I don’t know the exact number, but I guess not even 60-70% of Americans have access to lte. Abbott77 I’m not talking about a whole other continent than me and the person I was replying to lives in. I wasn’t even referring to other countries. A lot of these technologies don’t even need to exist elsewhere to be successful, but they of course will. So what the internet is like in places I don’t live doesn’t effect me and that’s up to those nations to roll out the needed infrastructure. There are more than enough people in the world in population centers that there is no reason to hold back these advancements because there isn’t adequate coverage elsewhere. theeht10 10. But that statistic is bullshit. It’s emblazoned on the verizon billboards but it’s not true. Read the fine print. What they are considering is perhaps where people live, excluding where they may travel and they only talk about a 'signal'. Well, what is a signal? Is it the most minuscule blips on a spectrum analyzer? Or is it something strong enough to make a call with such as a signal strength of -115db or better? You really need to get out more and try making calls and using data on the road. Venture more than a mile beyond the interstate where the other 2% (8 million people) live and report back about that experience. Abbott77 I live in Colorado. I drive all over this and surrounding states. The only places I don’t have signal are places that are foot traffic only in the middle of the wilderness. My father lives 12 miles in from a highway down a dirt road and I get 4G LTE out in his part of the state. I drive all over Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico. I almost never don’t have signal, and when I don’t I’m in literally the middle of nowhere where there is no infrastructure of any kind, electricity or the like. Having cell service cover 100% of the united states is not necessary. Deer, elk and moose don’t need cell coverage. And boo hoo that 2% of people don’t have service. ![]() Abbott77 And for that reason I choose to have Verizon… But I have the option to choose a different carrier that has the best coverage, as everyone else does. You get what you pay for. Trotting out one carrier’s coverage map when I have several choices is not making your case in the least. Those other swaths are just elk and deer and the occasional cougar, bear, coyote and wolf. foremi And the idea that 5g will be for home internet is a joke. Considering how bad 4G is now and add a much higher frequency and stupid short range I can’t see how it would be viable or even better, especially for those that actually need 4G home internet. So it’s all hype so you can hit your data cap faster downloading who knows what. tb4000 The goal is for it to replace home broadband entirely as far as what they’re implying. I’ve used that Netgear Nighthawk LTE router before and although it was only 4G it was workable due to the ethernet ports available. Tex As People in Houston are getting 800 Mbps on Verizon 5g. Steven Quinn The only problem is customer that Verizon FiOS are in a bigger area and get 1gb and is able to stream in 4k. Anywhere in there house using your cellphone WiFi. Verizon wireless should look at what customer want and not what a company is trying to push onto them. JFitzgerald I negotiate against the carriers (wired and wireless) for a living, so I’m no fan of their business practices in general – but – these comments are ridiculous.Have any of you, including the author, actually stopped to think for 15 seconds about the massive technical and financial challenges of creating, from nothing, a 5G network?I’m guessing not.And then in two years all y’all will just take it for granted, or more likely complain it’s not fast enough for some silly game you want to play.I’m so tired of seeing no-nothings complain about people who actually get s(tuff) done. When’s the last time you built anything of value? 你上一次創(chuàng)造有價值的東西是什么時候? theagentsmith You are torally right, there isn’t much to complain. For me it’s crazy they already started to rollout 5G in 2019.I only find ridiculous to advertise LTE Advanced as 5G. In Italy the networks call it 4.5G which is reasonable. The Verizon phone switching from 4G to 5G I believe it is the way its firmware is designed and not Verizon fault. It will probably stay in idle on 4G to save power and switch to 5G only when in use. Abbott77 It absolutely could very soon beat fiber when it comes to downloads and gaming everywhere you are. Of course as we stand 5g network availability is just hype, but hype is what creates demand and pushes competition and thus races to deploy in as many places as possible. ![]() IntrepiiD You entirely missed the point of the article. The topic isn’t the service — it’s comparing the service to the companies’ stated claims and illuminating the way that they mislead consumers.I think this is easy enough to understand. SC310 As per Intrepid’s statement, it is the media’s job to hold corporations accountable. So this is not complaining, but rather a form of fact-checking. ? |
