這首詩(shī)的作者是理查德·亨利·斯托達(dá)德(1825-1903)，美國(guó)評(píng)論家，詩(shī)人。生于美國(guó)馬薩諸塞州，年輕時(shí)住紐約城，當(dāng)過(guò)鐵匠。1849年開(kāi)始靠寫(xiě)作為生，隨后貢職于多個(gè)雜志社，擔(dān)任編輯和評(píng)論員。他的詩(shī)歌作品以寧?kù)o，誠(chéng)懇，細(xì)膩，理想化著名，被人稱(chēng)為抒情詩(shī)人。

There are gains for all our losses. 

There are balms for all our pain;

But when youth, the dream, departs

It takes something from our hearts,

And it never comes again.
