第一節(jié) (共15小題,每小題2分,共30分)

Will there ever be another Einstein? This is the undercurrent (潛流) of conversation at Einstein memorial meetings throughout the year. A new Einstein will appear, scientists say. But it may take a long time. After all, more than 200 years separated Einstein from Isaac Newton.

Many physicists say the next Einstein hasn't been born yet, or is a baby now. That's because the search for a unified theory that would explain all the forces of nature has pushed current mathematics to its limits. New math must be created after the problem can be solved.

But researchers say there are many other factors working against another Einstein appearing anytime soon. For one thing, physics is a much different field today. In Einstein's day, there were a few thousand physicists worldwide, and the theorists who could argue with Einstein probably would fit into a streetcar with seats to spare. Education is different, too. One key aspect of Einstein's training that-is little noticed is the years of philosophy he read as a teenager-Kant, Schopenhauer and Spinoza, among others. It taught him how to think independently about space and time and it wasn't long before he became a philosopher himself.

And Einstein was a clever musician. The interplay between music and math is well-known. Einstein would play his violin hard as a way to think through a knotty physics problem.

Today, universities have produced millions of physicists. There aren't many jobs in science for them, so they go to Wall Street and Silicon Valley to apply their analytical skills. Those who stay in science don't work alone and they sometimes do experiment together which takes years.

It's hard to imagine a renegade (背叛者) like Einstein standing it. "Maybe there is an Einstein out there today," said Columbia University physicist Brian Greene,"but it would be a lot harder for him to be heard."

61.According to the second paragraph, the next Einstein will _____.

A. have to create new math

B. create a unified theory

C. have to be born now

D. push math to its limits

62. The underlined words "knotty" in the fourth paragraph means _____.

A. easy B. interesting C. strange D. difficult

63. Which of the following will be useful for the next Einstein to be born?

A. There will be music around.

B. There will be no problems to solve.

C. There will be suitable philosophy to study.

D. There are only a few physicists.

64. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

A. Wait for the Next Coming Einstein

B. Environment Needed for the Birth for the Next Einstein

C. Philosophy---- The Next Einstein Wants

D. Einstein and the Next Einstein

There are usually both parents and two children in a typical British family. In most British families both parents work. Very young children go to nursery schools or stay at home with a childminder. Old people usually live in their own homes or a nursing home if they cannot look after themselves. British parents try to spend their free time with their children going to the cinema, museums or parks. During the week they usually have dinner together.

Americans often move house from city to city or from state to state. For this reason American families live far away from their relatives. However, they keep in touch with each other by telephone or letter. During the holidays or at celebrations like Thanksgiving, families often visit each other. A typical American family is the same as a British family. Both parents work. Like British families, American parents try to spend time with their children at weekends. They often visit museums. They also go to the cinema or to the park.

There are many different kinds of houses in the UK. More than half of the people in the UK own their houses. Other people rent houses or flats. British people like to feel comfortable and safe in their homes. They like to make their homes and gardens look attractive. Perhaps that’s why gardening is one of their most popular pastimes.

The buildings in American cities are similar to those in British cities. There are tall tower blocks, skyscrapers(摩天樓),houses and large brick buildings. In the suburbs, however, the houses are very different. A lot of Americans live in wooden houses with front and back gardens. Two thirds of Americans own their houses. Other Americans rent houses, apartments or rooms. Americans are usually very house-proud and take good care of their homes.

A. usually have two children

B. have difficulty in finding good jobs

C. don’t like living with their parents

68. We can be sure that ______.

B. more Americans live in the suburbs

C. Americans think more highly of their families

Walk into the small Australian town of Coober Pedy on any given day, and you will get the strange feeling of an abandoned ghost town. So why even call it a town? Because that’s exactly what it is, complete with 4,000 plus residents of 48 nationalities, all of whom live underground!

Located about 846 km north of Adelaide, Coober Pedy was built in 1915, following the discovery of opal (蛋白石). As people from across the country and world flocked to mine the precious stone, they realized that while working under the ground was easy, living above it was not, thanks to the extreme temperatures.

They therefore did what humans do best when faced with a situation they cannot change—adaptation! In this case, it meant living underground, by changing old mines into homes and building the world’s first and most likely, the only underground town.

As years have gone by, the homes have become bigger and more sophisticated (復(fù)雜巧妙的). There are now also several hotels and inns (旅館)to accommodate the tourists that flock in from all over the world, to see this unusual town. And while the structures may be located underground, they are as good as those that lie above. Not only do the underground town take full advantage of the beautiful red rock, but they also feature all the modern amenities(便利設(shè)施) like walk-in closets, modern kitchens and televisions. And if that is not enough, the town also has gift shops selling opal jewelry, a couple of museums and even a church! For those that need some physical activities, the town offers a golf course.

Besides being the opal capital of the world and a popular tourist destination, Coober Pedy is also a favorite among filmmakers and has been featured in movies such as Pitch Black, Red Planet and Opal Dream.

72. People first built Coober Pedy to _______.

A. avoid the hot weather

B. make full use of room

C. protect themselves from the animal danger above

D. take advantage of the local materials

73. According to the fourth paragraph, Coober Pedy ______.

A. has very simple structures

B. has become a great tourist attraction

C. provides more amenities than a modern hotel

D. only allows people to live a simple life

74. What do people probably feel when staying in Coober Pedy?

A. Disappointed. B. Frightened C. Comfortable D. Curious.

75. What is the text mainly about?

A. A ghost town in Australia.

B. Australia’s exciting underground town—Coober Pedy.

C. The structure of an underground town.

D. The attraction of Coober Pedy to filmmakers.
