so that 既可以引導目的狀語從句，也可以引導結果狀語從句；而so …that只引導表示結果的狀語從句。 一、so that 引導目的狀語從句。 1．so that 引導的目的狀語從句，作“以便”、“為的是”解，從句中通常用may(might)或can(could)。例如： We learn English so that we may get more knowledge. 我們學英語為的是獲得更多的知識。 They got up early so that they could catch the first bus. 他們早起，以便能趕上第一班公共汽車。 如果so that 引出的從句為否定結構，則其謂語多用should + v., 此時，so that 常譯為“免得”或“以免”。例如： He looked down so that she should not see his eyes. 他朝下望著，免得她看到他的眼睛。 2．當so that 從句和主句的主語一致時，可用in order to 或不定式短語替換從句的開始部分，其意義基本不變。例如： They got up early so that they could catch the first bus. →They got up early in order to catch the first bus. →They got up early to catch the first bus. 二、so that 和so …that 引導的表示結果的狀語從句。 1．so that 引導的表示結果的狀語從句作“因此”、“以致”、“所以”解。so that 與so …that 的意思相近，但后者含有表示程度的意思，而前者卻沒有。例如： He spoke clearly, so that everybody understood him. 他講話講得很清楚，所以大家都聽懂了。 2．so…that 引導的結果狀語從句中，so…that 意為“如此……以致”。so 是副詞，用以修飾其后的形容詞或副詞，說明其程度的大小。 so…that句型中的that 在口語中?？梢允∪?，其意思不變。例如： The story was so funny it made everybody laugh. 這故事太滑稽了，把大家都逗笑了。 so…that 句型中的“so+形容詞（副詞）”可以提至句首，以加強語氣，但要注意用倒裝語序。例如： So bright was the moon that the flowers were bright as by day. 在如此明亮的月光下，花兒就象白天一樣鮮艷。 三、so that一道的目的狀語從句和結果狀語從句的大致區(qū)別。 1．so that 引導的目的狀語從句表示一種尚非事實的目的，往往表示一種愿望，有虛擬的含義，所以從句中常用may、might、should、would、can、could 等情態(tài)動詞。而so that引導的結果狀語從句中不存在虛擬含義，一般不用上述情態(tài)動詞，即便用了情態(tài)動詞，也主要表示事實。試比較： I’m going to take an early bus so that I may get there in time. (目的) I took an early bus, so that I could get there in time. (結果) 2．就so that 的位置而言，引導目的狀語從句時通常放在一起而不分開；引導結果狀語從句時，看實際情況而定，有的放在一起，有的卻分開，采取so…that的形式。例如： He studies hard so that he can pass the exam.(引導目的狀語從句) 他努力學習以便考試及格。 He climbed higher so that he looked farther.(引導結果狀語從句) 他爬得更高，結果也看得更遠。 It was so hot that all of us slept outside last night. (引導結果狀語從句) 天氣那么熱，我們大家昨晚走在外面睡覺。 3. 從標點符號的使用情況看，so that引導的結果狀語從句多數(shù)在從句前使用逗號，而其引導目的狀語從句前不用標點符號。
