In a move that has the potential to reshape the look and feel of many cities one of China’s biggest “dockless bike share” companies Mobike will announce today that it will officially launch in Manchester and Salford.
The plan from Mobike – which operates 5 million bikes in China and is backed by Foxconn and internet giant Tencent – has the blessing of both city councils and Transport for Greater Manchester. It will kick off at the end of June with an initial 1000 bikes and is likely to expand dramatically from there.

Beijing-based bike share company Ofo has started on a small scale in Cambridge but has ambitious expansion plans
Unlike in most western schemes where shared bikes are rented from docks in China many urban residents instead find available bikes via GPS and an app and then unlock it with their phone. The “Uber for bikes” model has also seen virulent competition and bikes littered haphazardly around cities or dumped by the hundreds in bushes and alleyways.
Mobike’s announcement means it will competing overseas with one of its most successful domestic competitors Ofo who are also gearing up for global expansion.

Blocking footpaths is what lots of drivers do. A bike would take up less space.

Do they inconvenience you? They are no trouble to me at all.

The answer is to make parking the bike in a proper designated space a condition of using the scheme. If you don't park the bike properly you get fined. If there are sufficient bike parking spaces which there would be under my suggestion then riders won't need to leave their bike in a shop doorway middle of the pavement etc. because they'll never be more than few metres away from a proper parking space.

I don't get on a bike unless it's been customized with a butterfly handlebar and a banana seat. If I can't get the chopper look I'm going for I don't even bother.
[/copy]

Yes although Oxford bike works is not really in Oxford. It's about an hour (by bike) south. Also it's more an artisan bike builder just because I want a utility bike doesn't mean I don't want a good value Chinese import.

Depending on the type of utility bike Oxford Bike Works do some very sensible looking bikes... http://www./model-1e/

Yes but better not to replace one myth with another. Again a little case of iirc as I've not time to google.. but I think it was proposed by the Greens Klen thought it a good idea a but was very low key about it until Boris started leaning heavily on it as a 'new idea' in the mayoral election. I think Ken argued that he was not progressing it faster as he was waiting to see how the Paris scheme panned out. I deeply dislike Boris but the scheme was (expensively) implemented under his watch so the alliteration bone idol or not is not so inappropriate.

These rental bikes are not used in China for riding any distance. What makes them great is you can walk from the subway spot a bike outside and scan it then ride it for a few hundred meters. (Chinese style usually on the footpath ringing the bell).
Get to your destination stop right outside put the bike on its stand and lock it. It is the combination of public transport and bike that makes them so convenient. It is bringing literally millions of people back to riding a bike for the fist time since childhood and even suited businessmen can be spotted riding them sedately. Rental bikes are not for cyclists. They are for the rest of us who would rather pedal than walk for 10 minutes if there is a bike waiting for us right there.
[/copy]

Bring it on. Great idea. The application of tech here seems great and could play a part in improving air quality possibly even lifestyles. Dockless v docked bike hire is a no brainer. Obviously with the caveat that firms involved in tech like this running over many coutries are currently among the worst national tax payers and this is a real issue. But a separate one. But this issue of taxation in a globalised world is tricky...

in the UK we already cycle a lot and list of us own a bike. In the UK only 2% of trips are by bike 58% of the over 5s don't have a bike and our cycling stats are pretty much the worst in Europe.

Very true. I tried to buy a good commuter bike in Oxford. For the UK the bike share is relatively high with some people doing every day cycling there. It still took me visiting four bike shops before someone offered to fit a stem extender and a different handle bar to one of the bicycles because non of the shops had a decent utility bike for sale. You could get cheap really heavy 200 GBP city bikes for the occasional short trip but a decent quality utility bike in the 600-1000 GBP range was just not on offer anywhere.
