 about                                                                                                                         1. How [What] about…? (1) 用來(lái)詢問(wèn)情況或打聽(tīng)消息等,意為:……怎么樣?……如何? 如: I’m ready. What about you? 我準(zhǔn)備好了,你呢? How about Mother? Is she all right? 媽媽怎么樣?她好嗎? How about your English exam yesterday? 昨天的英語(yǔ)考得怎么樣? (2) 用來(lái)提出請(qǐng)求,建議或征求對(duì)方意見(jiàn),意為:(你認(rèn)為)……怎么樣? ……如何? 如: How about having a rest? 休息一會(huì)兒怎么樣? What about a cup of tea? 喝杯茶怎么樣? Of course I’ll come, what about Friday? 我當(dāng)然要來(lái),星期五來(lái)如何? What about Father? We can’t just leave him here. 父親怎么辦?我們不能這樣把他丟下。 (3) 用來(lái)諷刺或挖苦對(duì)方,意為:你……又怎么解釋? 你……又怎么說(shuō)? 如: A:You shouldn’t have failed to pass the driving test. 你本不該不通過(guò)駕駛考試的。 B:What? How about you—did it three times? 你說(shuō)什么? 那你考了3次又怎么解釋?  A:I have never had an accident while driving? 我開(kāi)車從未出過(guò)事故。 B:How about that time you ran into a lamppost?那次你撞到路燈柱上又是怎么回事呢? 2. That’s about it.  表示話講完了或某事介紹完畢,意為:差不多就這么一回事;大概就這么一些了;就是這樣。如: I’ve told you all I know;that’s about it. 我把所知道的都告訴你了,差不多就是這么一回事。 A:Can you tell us more?你能再告訴我們一些情況嗎? B:I’m afraid I can’t. That’s about it. 恐怕沒(méi)什么可說(shuō)的了,大概就這些了。 All right, that’s about it. 好吧,就這樣。 有時(shí)也說(shuō)成That’s about all.  3. What are you about?  用來(lái)詢問(wèn)對(duì)方在干什么,意為:你在干什么? 你在忙什么?如: Hi,Jim. What are you about? 喂,吉姆,你在干什么? A:What are you about, John? 約翰,你在干什么? B:I’m writing a letter. 我在寫信。 4. while I’m (you’re)about it 表示在做某事的同時(shí),意為:同時(shí),順便。如: I’ll make you a cup of tea while I’m about it. 我將順便給你泡杯茶。 Do the shopping now, and while you’re about it get me that book from the library. 現(xiàn)在去買東西吧,順便幫我從圖書館把那本書借回來(lái)。 above                                                                                                                        above all 用來(lái)引出一個(gè)說(shuō)話者特別強(qiáng)調(diào)的概念,意為:最重要的是;最主要的是;特別是;首先(可放在句首可插在句中)。如: Above all, he is reliable. 首要的一點(diǎn),他是可信賴的。 A clock must be above all correct. 時(shí)鐘最重要的是要準(zhǔn)確。 Children, above all, should be honest. 小孩子首先要誠(chéng)實(shí)。 I’d like, above all, to buy a computer. 最重要的我想要買臺(tái)電腦。 有時(shí)也說(shuō)成above everything, above all things等。如: Above all things we should send them some food. 我們最重要的是要給他們送些食物去。 admit                                                                                                                          I admit 表示承認(rèn)某一事實(shí),意為:我承認(rèn)。如: This, I admit, was wrong. 我承認(rèn)這是錯(cuò)的。 It’s my fault, I admit. 我承認(rèn)這是我的錯(cuò)。 I do admit, Tom, I’m rather proud of this place. 湯姆,我必須承認(rèn)我對(duì)這個(gè)職位感到很自豪。 有時(shí)也說(shuō) I must admit, 與 I do admit 大致同義,比單獨(dú)用I admit. 語(yǔ)氣要強(qiáng)。 |
