      這組形容詞都可表示“困難的”、“艱巨的”的意思。

  difficult   普通用詞，指有困難需要克服，側(cè)重于強調(diào)需要智慧、技巧，而不是體力。

      1) English is a language easy to learn but difficult / hard to master.

           英語是一門很容易學(xué)習(xí)的語言,但要掌握它并非意易事

   2) No matter how difficult the task may be, we will manage to fulfil it on time.

          不管任務(wù)有多艱巨,我們會設(shè)法按時完成。

hard   可指需要智慧、技巧，也可指需要體力; 語氣比difficult強，需要作巨大的努力。

1) The piano is hard to move.

    這臺鋼琴搬起來很費勁。

2) Only through hard training, can you achieve good marks in field races.

             只有通過刻苦訓(xùn)練,你才能在比賽中獲得好成績。

arduous   是正式用詞，強調(diào)需要持續(xù)的艱巨的努力才能完成。

1) Great learning can be won only by arduous toil.

               淵博的學(xué)識只有通過艱苦的努力才能獲得。

2) We made arduous efforts to finish the work ahead of schedule.

               我們作出了艱苦的努力提前完成了這項工作。

formidable    側(cè)重強調(diào)難度大。

         1) I don’t think that you will object to me taking charge of the formidable project, do you?

             我認為你不會反對我負責(zé)這項艱巨的工程,對嗎

         2) He would have undertaken the formidable task but that he lacked the courage to face up

             to the responsibility.

          要不是他他缺乏勇氣去面對責(zé)任，他會承擔(dān)這項艱巨的任務(wù)的。
