Chinese Students in the U.S.
v There are currently approximately 60,000 Chinese students studying in the U.S..
v Almost 5% of all graduate students in the U.S. are Chinese.
v China has the second highest number of exchange students in the U.S.

v Throughout China, the number of student visa applications is on the rise. In summer 2005, the Shanghai Consulate General interviewed 20% more students than during summer 2004. We also have seen large increases in student groups going for summer camps and short-term educational exchanges.
v Most student applicants are issued visas. About seven out of eight student visa applicants were issued visas this summer.
Student Visas are a Priority
v Growth in visa applications means that during peak seasons there can be a wait of several weeks to get an appointment for a visa interview in many classes (including B1/B2 business travelers). However, we give priority to student applicants.
v F, M, and J (students, vocational students, and exchange visitors) visa applicants do not have to wait several weeks for visa interviews. Even in our busiest seasons, students can generally make an appointment for an interview in just a day or two.
About the Visa Interview
v There are three main factors Visa Officers consider for student visa applicants:
o Are you a legitimate student?
o Do you intend to return to China after graduation?
o Can you pay for your education?
Factors Visa Officers Consider
v Are you a legitimate student?
o Bring all your acceptance letters, SEVIS receipt, and financial aid documents.
o Do you have a clear plan of study?
o Why did you choose your advisor and program?
v Do you intend to return to China after graduation?
o Students should be able to discuss what they want to study and what they will do with their degrees. Rehearsed speeches are not credible.
o If you plan to spend a lot of your family’s money for your education, then explain how it would be possible for you to earn back that money in China. Keep in mind Visa Officers are very aware of local income levels.
v Can you pay for your education?
o If parents are paying for your tuition, you need to show that your parents have stable jobs and a history of income.
o Large amounts of recently deposited money do not help your case. Bank records and tax documents should show a history of at least several years of earnings and savings.
Validity of Student Visas
Beginning in June 2005, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in China began issuing 1 year, multiple-entry visas to Chinese students (F, M and J visas classes). Previously, the maximum validity for these purposes was six months, two entries.
About Financial Aid
Students with full, partial, or no financial aid are all eligible for visas, as long as they are able to prove their ability to pay for their education and they overcome the assumption of immigrant intent.
About Special Clearances
v Some student applicants require a special “check” in Washington. Clearances for those who require them are a priority and are handled very efficiently. For most student cases, we receive responses from Washington within three weeks.
v Students can speed the process by bringing a detailed resume, including publications, their research plan, and information on their advisor in the U.S. with them to the interview.
v As of February 11, 2005, the validity of these clearances has been extended. If a student is subject to a check today, that check will normally be valid for the length of the academic program.
About “Top-Ranked” Universities
v Many students are overly concerned about university rankings. University rankings are compiled by private institutions, not by the U.S. government. University rankings do not have an impact on the visa process.
v Visa officers understand that there are more than four thousand US colleges, universities, and community colleges in the U.S. Different schools will be appropriate for different students. Attendance at a lesser-known college or university is not a ground of ineligibility, and applicants cannot be refused a visa for that reason.
Making an Appointment for an Interview
v Apply early, the U.S. Consulate recommends student applicants appointments two months in advance of their program start date.
v Visas CAN be issued more than 30 days before the program start date. The student may not, however, enter the U.S. until 30 days or less before their program start date.
v To make an appointment, please call our Visa Center at 400-8872-333.
