The entire length of Egypt's Suez Canal (dark north-south line) is visible in this low-oblique (傾斜的) tending from the port city of Suez in the south to Port Said in the north, a distance of approximately (大約) 100 miles (160 kilometers), the canal connects the Red Sea with the eastern Mediterranean Sea.  蘇伊士運(yùn)河(Suez Canal)位于埃及境內(nèi)，是連通歐亞非三大洲的主要國(guó)際海運(yùn)航道，連接紅海與地中海，使大西洋、地中海與印度洋聯(lián)結(jié)起來(lái)，大大縮短了東西方航程。與繞道非洲好望角相比，從歐洲大西洋沿岸各國(guó)到印度洋縮短５５００８００９公里；從地中海各國(guó)到印度洋縮短８０００１００００公里；對(duì)黑海沿岸來(lái)說(shuō)，則縮短了１２０００公里，它是一條在國(guó)際航運(yùn)中具有重要戰(zhàn)略意義的國(guó)際海運(yùn)航道，每年承擔(dān)著全世界１４％的海運(yùn)貿(mào)易。 Egypt's Suez Canal was completed in 1869, to shorten the route between Europe and the Indian Ocean. It can accommodate (容納,適應(yīng)) some of the world's largest cargo (貨物) vessels (船) and naval (海軍的) ships. 蘇伊士運(yùn)河于1869年完工，縮短了歐洲和印度洋之間的航程，能容納世界上大量的貨物，船只以及航艦  It had no locks because there is no great difference between the levels of the Red and Mediterranean Seas. Most of the canal can handle only single-lane traffic. When the canal was constructed it measured 8 metres deep, 22 metres wide at the bottom and about 70 metres wide at the surface. It has been enlarged (擴(kuò)大)several times to handle (應(yīng)付) bigger ships and more traffic. At present about 25,000 ships pass through the canal every year.
